Measure Fabrics: DIY Modern Corset Look

Hi Gems, for my second fabric featured look as a Measure Maker with Measure Fabric I was able to create a look using this beautiful cotton twill Ikat fabric. There is something really eye catching about IKAT printed fabric! It’s warped design is so mesmerizing and eclectic. I just love it! This cotton twill fabric is such a versatile textile I could have created just about anything with it. However, lately I’ve been enticed by modern bustiers and corset looks, and I have been eager to try a few of the looks myself.

Corsets have come a long way from the torturous undergarments they were made to be. These are beautiful pieces that flatter the figure , cinching the waist giving the illusion of an hour glass figure and spicing up the simplest of garments creating modern styled looks! There are so many stylish ways to add them to a look.

For my corset I used Simplicity pattern 8129. I opted to add a zipper for the front to make it easy to put on and take off. I added wide ribbon through the eyelets of my corset to give the corset a modern edge. This cotton twill fabric was great for this make. Its medium weight so not too heavy. There is boning in the corset so it moves with you keeping its shape without being too constricting. This piece was simpler to make than it looks and doesn’t take long at all. It’s a quick accessory to create and add to a garment. However, I do suggest sticking with a medium weighted woven fabric such as cotton twill. If your fabric is too light it may not maintain its shape too well. If it is too heavy it could be uncomfortable.

The dress was a special piece for me because it was my first self drafted dress. I made the dress to be semi fitted. I added darts on the back and front to give it shape but wanted it to be worn casually with sandals or flops yet have the option of dressing it up with pair of heels. This dress can be worn both backwards and front. I added a deep V to the back with a zipper closure. This is my favorite way to wear it as it is seen in most of the pictures but based on preference it can be worn either way. It has drop shoulder seam look with an attached puff sleeve and pleated cuff which adds volume to the hem! I made this dress long by adding a panel to the hem of the dress but this would also be great as a shorter version and removing the panel, which I may make next time!

I had so much fun creating and wearing the look ! I paired it with my highlighter Teva’s which are a casual pair of shoes. I thought the color pop paired well with this blue and white and kept the look casual, chic and fun. I love the look! With or without the corset this works great!

Until Next Time!
